Rent
a rack of real Cisco routers for a little as $ 0.50 an hour:

Get
a router simulator for as little as $20.00. Search amazon.com
for "ccna simulator" to find used prices on Bosons CCNA Simulator and the
Sybex CCNA Virtual simulator. Also,
try the same search on E-Bay - but be careful buying on E-Bay. You may
have no recourse if you get ripped off!

Not
Cisco - But Related Technologies - Ethereal & Linux
Ethereal Help
Getting started with Ethereal:
Ethereal overview:
http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/6842
An overview of how
to use Ethereal:
http://www.samag.com/documents/s=1441/sam0111a/0111a.htm
Ethereal Packet
Sniffing is a detailed look at
using Ethereal.
Ethereal labs for DNS, ARP, IP, TCP and HTTP.
A "must" for CCNA preparation!
http://gaia.cs.umass.edu/ethereal-labs/
Ethereal for Windows
If do not want to run Linux on your compute try Ethereal for Windows for
data sniffing!
Installing Ethereal on Windows is a two step process:
First,
download and install the
wincap packet capture software:
Second, download and install
Ethereal for windows:
If you are not sure how to use Ethereal I have written a lab that may
help:

Knoppix-STD
Knoppix-STD is a bootable CD packed with
the Linux OS with an emphasis on information security tools. Knoppix-STD is
meant to be used by both the novice looking to learn more about information
security and the security professional looking for another swiss army knife
for their tool kit. For the CCNA student, Knoppix-STD provides sniffer
tools like Ethereal and Ettercap as well as the TCP/IP network exploration
tool NMAP.
CREATING A
KNOPPIX-STD CD:
Download
knoppix-std-0.1b.iso for this site:
http://ftp.ntua.gr/pub/linux/knoppix-std/
Version 0.1b is
not the latest version of Knoppix-STD, but it has an easier GUI for those
who are familiar with Microsoft Windows than the Knoppix-STD Version 0.1
After downloading
the “iso” image you must burn it to a CD. This does not mean copy the “iso”
to a CD. Most CD burning software has a command to “create a CD from iso”,
the exact command will depend on your particular software.
THE LATEST VERSION OF KNOPPIX-STD:
If you prefer the latest version of
Knoppix-STD you can find extensive information at the Knoppix-STD home page:
http://www.knoppix-std.org/
RUNNING KNOPPIX-STD:
Make sure that the BIOS on your PC
is set to attempt to boot from the CD before the HD. Insert the CD and
reboot the PC. When Knoppix-STD displays with the boot prompt “Boot:” press
enter. The remainder of the boot process is automatic.
FINDING ETHEREAL:
Ethereal is an open source packet
sniffer. Click on the “K” menu, choose “sniffers and assemblers” and
finally choose “Ethereal” from the submenu. Double click on the thumbnail
to see a screen shot.
FINDING NMAP
Nmap is a text based, open source
tool used to identify the IP address and TCP/UDP services used on a
network. Nmap front-end is GUI interface for Nmap. To find Nmap front-end
click on the “K” menu, choose “vulnerability assessment” and finally choose
“Nmap front-end” from the submenu.

FINDING NESSUS
Nessus is an open source tool that
scans a network and looks for security vulnerabilities. To find Nessus
front-end click on the “K” menu, choose “vulnerability assessment” and
finally choose “Nessus” from the submenu. Double click on the thumbnail to
see a screen shot.

GETTING HELP
There are four simple ways to get
more information about programs on the Knoppix-STD disk.
1) Use the help
files built into the programs. Double click on these thumbnails to see a
screen shot examples.

2) Use the man
pages for the program you need help with. Every program in Linux has built
in documentation called a man page (manual page). To view the man page open
the shell for the program you need help with. For example, to get help with
Ethereal open the shell in “sniffers and assemblers” (double click on the
thumbnail to see a screen shot).
In the shell, type “man ethereal”
(double click on the thumbnail to see a screen shot) .
You will see the first page of the
manual – press enter forward one line at a time. (double click on the
thumbnail to see a screen shot).

3) RTFM is an
acronym and it stands for Read The F***ing Manual.
Knoppix-STD has a great deal of documentation stored in the RFTM directories
of each general topic. For example, to access the documentation on
Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) open RTFM shell in the “IDS” submenu.
A variety of helpful documents will
now appear in a browser window (double click on the thumbnail to see a
screen shot).

4) The Web
is still your best friend. At the bottom of the desktop is an icon for the
web browser “Konqueror”, click on it.

Links are defined for most Knoppix
categories. These links can be found in the upper right of the browser
under the tab “STD”.

Also, try searching “google” for
more information.
SETTING THE ROOT PASSWORD
There is no root password built into
the Knoppix-STD distribution. If you need root access, you must first set
the root password:
1) run the 'Root Shell' option under
the Knoppix menu
2) enter a root password (only good for this session unless you have a
permanent desktop)
